Evaluation and Selection Process

  1. 1st Screening by the Writing Contest Screening Committee to scan submitted entries in accordance to the criteria and to select the shortlist for the Writing Contest Selection Committee. The Committee is represented by the SEAMEO Secretariat’s staff.

In November 2015, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) will mark half a century of its establishment. As a regional intergovernmental organization established among Southeast Asian countries, SEAMEO takes pride in its achievements over the years as Southeast Asian's leading organization in promoting regional cooperation and human resource development in education, science and culture.

On the occasion of SEAMEO's 50th year anniversary, the Organization is giving SEAMEO family members an opportunity to give everyone a trip down the memory lane through beautifully put together writing pieces. Therefore we are proud to announce the launch of the SEAMEO 50th Anniversary Essay Writing Contest.

The Contest is open to all alumni or current and former staff members of SEAMEO. We expect to receive touching, insightful and inspiring entries on memories related to SEAMEO. They should possess a level of uniqueness and creativity so that the narratives would attract immense reading interest as they draw recollections from the past. Following the given topic, writers can revisit some of their most memorable moments, events, or even their feelings and impressions coming from their personal experiences. Their stories can be told in the form of reflectional essays, or anecdotes.

The objectives of the SEAMEO's 50th Anniversary Essay Writing Contest are as follows:

  1. To promote the SEAMEO's works and contributions for human resource development in the Southeast Asian region on the occasion of 50th Year Anniversary;
  2. To create an opportunity for SEAMEO alumni and SEAMEO staff members to share their memories and moments with SEAMEO; and
  3. To build a collection of personal accounts of SEAMEO through the eyes of its alumni and staff members and archives of the Organisation's history.
II. Topic for Essay Writing:

Considering the occasion of SEAMEO's 50th Year Anniversary, the topic of the SEAMEO 50th Anniversary Essay Writing Contest is "My Memory of SEAMEO".

III. Eligible Participants:

All alumni and current staff members of SEAMEO Regional Centres including former and current SEAMEO Desk Officers and coordinators at the SEAMEO Member Countries, SEAMEO Associated Member Countries, and Affiliate Members are encouraged to reminisce on their past experiences and reencounter with their most memorable or cherished feelings and emotions in order to share these recollections with other staff members on this 50th Year Anniversary through a 400-600 words essay.

The eligible participants are:

1. SEAMEO Alumni includes:

  1. Participants of SEAMEO Centres and SEAMEO Secretariat's conferences/seminars/forums/activities;
  2. Researchers, fellows, scholars, trainees and students that participated in the SEAMEO Centres and SEAMEO Secretariat's activities and training programmes
  3. All levels of former full-time/part-time staff members of SEAMEO Regional Centres
  4. Experts, trainers and resource persons who had worked with SEAMEO Regional Centres
  5. Former SEAMEO Desk Officers and Coordinators at SEAMEO Member Countries/Associated Member Countries/Affiliate Members

2. Current full-time/part time staff, resource persons, and specialists of SEAMEO Regional Centres

3. Current SEAMEO Desk Officers/Coordinators in SEAMEO Member Countries/Associate Members Countries/Affiliate Member Countries

*Note: Current staff of the SEAMEO Secretariat will not be eligible to participate in this contest.

  1. The prizes for the winning essays are:
    • 1st Place: USD 600.00
    • 2nd Place: USD 400.00
    • 3rd Place: USD 200.00
  2. All winning articles will be published in 50th Anniversary Commemorative Publication and Video.
  3. All winners and shortlisted candidates will receive certificate from the SEAMEO Secretariat.

    • Format of writing: free narrative, essay, or anecdotal original story.
    • Written in English
    • A4 maximum 1 page, 400-600 words.
    • Font: Times New Roman
    • Font size: 12
    • Margins: standard (1.5 inches on all four sides)

In entering this competition, all applicants must acknowledge and guarantee that their entries are their original works and do not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the essay.
  2. The SEAMEO Secretariat shall keep all data entered by the applicants in the Submission Form as confidential. However, applicants must agree that such personal data, especially name, organization, address and information that the applicants have/had associated with SEAMEO may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of this Contest.
  3. The SEAMEO Secretariat shall have the right to store the winning entries and finalists in its database and also use them for publication purposes.

Q1Are there any exceptions to the age limit for participating in the contest?

A1No, you must be 25 years old or younger as of June 15, 2018, which is the entry deadline date. That means you must be born after June 15, 1993. On the other hand, there is no minimum age requirement.

Q2Is there a fee for participating in this contest?

A2No, participation is free of charge.

Q3Do I have to be Japanese or Asian to join the contest?

A3A3: No, all nationalities can participate from anywhere in the world.

Q4My essay is a little over 700 words. Is it acceptable?

A4No, essays must be 700 words or less in order to qualify. However, the cover page and essay title are excluded from the word count. There is no minimum word count.

Q5Are the title and cover page included in the word count limit?

A5No, the 700 word count limit is for the body of the essay only.

Q6Do I need a cover page for my essay submitted online?

A6No, a cover page is only required for entries submitted by postal mail. For online entries, all required information is submitted through the registration form, and therefore, you do not need to include a cover page in your essay file.

Q7Can I give any title to my essay?

A7Yes, you can give your essay an original title as long as the content is in line with the theme.

Q8Is there a specific format for the essay (font style, size, line space, etc.)?

A8There are no particular rules regarding formatting. However, your essay file should be submitted in either MS Word(DOC/DOCX) or PDF format.

Q9Can I quote from books or websites? If so, where should I write the reference?

A9If you use quotations, please include the reference at the bottom of the essay. The reference should not be included in the word count.

Q10Can I add photos, images, or my biography to my essay?

Q14Can I submit my essay in my native language?

A14Essays are accepted in English, French, Spanish, German or Japanese only, since these are the only languages the contest organizers and judges can read. However, we can accept essays written in other languages, if they are accompanied by translations in one of the accepted languages.

Q15Can we co-write and submit one essay as a team?

A15No. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
